Timesheets

I like my job. The people I work with are pretty cool, I get a little variety and sometimes I even go home feeling good about my day. But, the one thing I hate about it is the dreaded time sheets.

Every morning, Managerman gathers us up and we sit in a circle, and talk about what we did the day before. It’s worse on Mondays, because we have to talk about what we did last week! Not only that, but we have to submit timesheets for last week too! Now, I’m not a person renowned for my elephant-like memory, and remembering what I did in the last two minutes can sometimes be a challenge. This, I thought, was a perfect opportunity to try out Twitter

Twitter is a tool that lets you tell the world what you are doing. Once you set up a profile, you can submit messages to tell everyone what you are up to, a little like Facebook statuses, but it also keeps track of previous messages. How is this useful? Well, I sign in to Google Talk in the morning, and throughout the day, tell the Twitter bot what I am up to. At the end of the week, I just look at Twitter and have pretty much an instant time sheet. Magic! I’ve been using it some of last week and all this week so far. You don’t even need to write much, since most of the time it will just jog your memory. Here is my feed as an example.

Today, I discovered Cubevoice, which is pretty much the same as Twitter, but designed for work. You can create companies within Cubevoice and have people twittering away within the companies.

If it wasn’t for Managerman making a big push to get one of the other Lowly Placements to finish the big time-tracking app, I’d push to get everyone using Cubevoice.

  1. Hi Matt, I’m the director of product design for CubeVoice — thanks for the mention! I’d love to hear any ideas you have for us, get your feedback on what we currently have and where we’re going, etc. Drop me a line if you’re interested.
